Origine Rentals’ Guide to Tipping in Istanbul

Origine Rentals’ Guide to Tipping in Istanbul

As you explore the rich culture of Istanbul, understanding local customs like tipping can enhance your travel experience. Tipping, as in many other cultures, is a way to express gratitude for good service. However, it’s natural to be unsure about when, how much, and to whom to tip. The Origine Rentals family has prepared this guide to help you feel at home in Istanbul and navigate its tipping culture with ease.

Tipping at Restaurants and Cafes

Tipping is a common practice in Istanbul’s vibrant restaurant and cafe scene.
  • General Rule: If you are satisfied with the service, it is customary to leave a tip of around 5-10% of the total bill. This gesture shows your appreciation for the quality of service.
  • Method of Payment: Tips are most often left in cash. While some establishments offer the option to add a tip when paying by credit card, it is more common and widely appreciated to give the tip directly to the server in cash.
  • Smaller Establishments: In smaller, neighborhood-run eateries, tipping is not strictly expected. However, if you enjoyed your meal and the service, a small tip will be greatly appreciated by the locals.

Tipping for Transportation

Tipping is also a sign of courtesy for those who make your transportation around Istanbul easier.
  • Taxis: When paying your taxi fare, it’s common to simply round up the total to the nearest convenient amount. For example, if the fare is 180 TL, giving 200 TL and saying “keep the change” is a standard practice.
  • Airport Transfers: For private airport transfers arranged by Origine Rentals, it is a common practice to leave a tip if you are pleased with the driver’s service, especially if they helped with your luggage or were particularly kind. This shows respect for their effort.

Tipping for Other Services

Tipping culture also extends to other services you might encounter during your stay.
  • Hammam and Spa: In a traditional Turkish bath experience, it is customary to tip the staff (tellak). This is usually given in cash directly to the person who provided the service, and the amount can vary based on the quality of the service.
  • Valet Parking: It is a common courtesy to leave a small tip for the valet who brings your car to you.

An Important Note

In Turkey, a tip is not a mandatory charge but an expression of satisfaction with the service. Therefore, leaving a tip is entirely at your discretion. However, even a small tip can be a great motivator and a sign of appreciation for the service providers.

The Origine Rentals team is here to support you with any questions you may have during your stay. We hope you enjoy all the beauties and local culture that Istanbul has to offer.
